Transferable Machine Guns: An Unexpected Increase
In a rare but welcome turn of events, about 4,000 machine guns that were previously classified as “dealer samples” are now fully transferable to private collectors!!
These firearms were legally imported before 1986, specifically for police agencies but were misclassified by the ATF.[whoops] Now, the ATF has recognized the mistake and is correcting it with help from the National Firearms Act Trade and Collectors Association (NFATCA). This opens up a new realm of machine guns available to the public, including desirable pre-1986 H&K models, giving collectors a golden opportunity to add valuable firearms to their collections.
Faster NFA Transfers: One Week or Less
The second big news concern is the processing times for NFA items like suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and machine guns. Thanks to improvements in the eForms digital system and streamlined processes within the ATF, individual transfers now take a week or less if the electronic forms have no errors and taxes are paid via pay.gov.
This is a dramatic reduction from the previous nine-month ordeal, which frustrated many enthusiasts.
However, it’s crucial to ensure your digital fingerprints, forms, and payments are correctly filed to avoid unnecessary delays. While multi-person trusts still require manual review, individual transfers or single-person trusts now benefit from this efficient new system. For example, Ian notes that he recently helped a friend complete an NFA transfer in under 24 hours!
