Garden Lime
Garden Lime is simply ground and powdered limestone for use in the gardening world. But why exactly is this ground stone used?
Garden Lime is a natural and useful soil amendment used to raise and regulate the pH of your potting mix. This can be great for both container grown and landscape plants! Many plants grow well in slightly acidic soil, however, too much acidity can damage the roots and have a negative impact on the overall health/longevity of your plant. Garden Lime from Perfect Plants makes the soil a more hospitable place for your plant’s roots as well as increasing water penetration and making nutrients from fertilizer more readily available.
Change the Color of Hydrangea Flowers
One of the most common uses of Garden Lime in the home-garden landscape is using it to alter the color of flowering Hydrangeas! Penny Mac Hydrangeas are known for their lush foliage and bright blooms which respond and change color based on the pH of the soil. More neutral to alkaline soil will result in bright pink blooms while more acidic soil will turn the flowers a lovely sky blue! Experiment by having some Penny Mac a bright blue and others a beautiful pink to create a jaw-dropping color display in your front or backyard.
Natural Soil Alkalizer for Raising pH Balance
Rich organic matter such as peat moss and composted material can all lower soil pH (make the soil more acidic). Adding Lime based on either the soil bed size or the size of your plant can help make the mix more alkaline and thus more friendly for certain types of plants. Some plants which prefer more basic soils include:
Leafy Green VegetablesBeans and LegumesForsythiaHolm Oak
Great for Vegetable Gardening
Many vegetable plants herbs prefer to grow in more alkaline to neutral soils with pH ranges between 7.1 and 8.0. Adding organic matter and fertilizers can naturally lower the soil pH, making it difficult for these kinds of plants to absorb their nutrients and get the full benefits! That is why adding Garden Lime can bring the acidity down and make the nutrients more readily available and easier to soak up. Some edible plants which prefer neutral soils include:
