Hilti Nuron SDS-MAX Rotary Hammer Review TE 50-22

The Hilti TE 50-22 SDS-Max Rotary Hammer Makes The Jump to Nuron Power

There’s no question Hilti knows concrete, so when the product team set out to revamp its entire cordless system with Nuron technology, we were naturally curious about what that means for rotary hammers. Looking at their high-end Ultimate class, one of the biggest challenges was to rethink the corded models and design the Hilti Nuron TE 50-22 rotary hammer without dropping performance. I think you’ll like what they have to offer.

Pros

  • Low vibration
  • Active Torque Control minimizes kickbacks
  • 360° adjustable forward grip
  • Large bit capacity

Cons

Hilti TE 50-22 Rotary Hammer Performance

Hilti TE 50-22 Rotary Hammer
  • No-Load Speed: 390 RPMs
  • Hammer Rate: 3510 IPM
  • Impact Energy: 4.4 ft-lbs (6 J)
  • Triaxial Vibration Level: 6.8 m/s²
  • Optimum Hammer Drilling Range: 5/8 to 1 1/4 in.

Speed and Power

When it comes to brute strength, this rotary hammer does not mess around. With a hammer rate of 3,510 IPM and 4.4 ft-lbs of impact energy, even our 4000 PSI concrete test block didn’t stand a chance. It very quickly and efficiently reduced a portion of our old block to rubble in a matter of seconds. Additionally, I didn’t feel any excessive vibration in the handles, which is a real triumph with this kind of tool.

As for speed, the TE 50-22 isn’t going to set any records. However, Hilti did manage to increase the top speed from 360 RPMs up to 390 RPMs when compared to the corded TE 50-AVR. With that said, the lower RPMs do offer an extra layer of safety, especially in case of a bind up while using a larger bit.

Hilti TE 50-22 Rotary Hammer Design Notes

  • Model: Hilti TE 50-22
  • Power Source: Hilti Nuron B 22 battery

  • Length: 20 in.
  • Chuck Type: SDS-MAX TE-Y

Size and Weight

Compared to its other SDS-Plus cousins in the Hilti lineup, this tool is no featherweight. It measures 20 inches from tip to tail, and weighs in at 12.1 pounds as a bare tool and 14.9 pounds with the recommended B 22-170 battery.

As with most of Hilti’s rotary hammers, the TE 50-22 features an adjustable forward grip that can rotate 360° around the chuck to accommodate any hand position. One big difference is that this model isn’t compatible with a depth rod. Regardless, it’s very easy to maneuver and control this tool when using these handles in tandem.

Due to its larger size and weight, this may not be the best choice for overhead drilling applications. For that, I suggest you consider the Hilti TE 6-22 which offers confident drilling performance while

Comfort and Safety

Hilti equipped the TE 50-22 rotary hammer with both their Active Vibration Reduction (AVR) and Active Torque Control (ATC) for added safety and comfort.

The AVR design adds advanced vibration control and makes a noticeable difference in fatigue over the course of a long day. As part of the system, the rear handle has a built-in vibration dampening zone between the handle and the tool body.

The ATC instantly stops rotation if it senses a bind-up while you’re drilling. Particularly with larger bits and drilling around rebar, it’s a feature that can save some serious discomfort or injury.

Mode Selection

The Hilti TE 50-22 has a 2-mode dial to switch between the rotary hammer mode and chipping mode. There’s also a third position that allows you to adjust the angle of your chisel. Turn the dial on the left side of the tool body to match your application, and you’re good to go.

Additional Features

  • Compatible with all Hilti Nuron B 22 batteries

The Bottom Line

The Hilti TE 50-22 Rotary Hammer is a fantastic SDS-Max machine that will break up and drill into just about anything that stands in its way. It’s got a decent amount of power for its class, but that’s only part of the equation. Hilti’s Active Vibration Reduction and Active Torque Control do a phenomenal job of making the job easier on your body. Overall, this is a great option if you’re looking to cut the cord and experience the Nuron advantage.
