Bear Finds a Sweet Treat in SoCal Fridge

A black bear raided a Southern California family’s garage fridge and knew exactly what it wanted as soon as it saw it. Who knew bears love to eat watermelon? In a video captured by the La Cañada Flintridge homeowners, the large bear manages to open the doors to the fridge and freezer in the garage. It grabbed a sweet, refreshing snack, and carried it away. The bear paused to eat the watermelon before heading back into the nearby wilderness.

In the video, onlookers screech as the bear saunters into the garage, right up to the fridge, and expertly opens it. It rummages around for a bit, then grabs the watermelon.

In an interview with ABC 7 News, homeowner Chris Yee said his kids recorded the video. “It really just, with its mouth, just took that quarter piece of watermelon out without disturbing anything else, thankfully, and then proceeded to find a safe spot to enjoy it.”

This a black bear, despite having brown fur (wild brown bears no longer roam in California).

Bears are smart and sometimes even break into people’s homes to raid their refrigerators. One repeat offender, a three-legged bear in Florida named Tripod, recently broke into a home, opened the fridge, then closed it and left after realizing there was no food inside.
