Metabo HPT’s rotary hammer roster runs deep, with both corded and cordless models for every level of work. Adding to the latter category is the Metabo HPT 36V 1 9/16-inch Rotary Hammer, which utilizes the brand’s MultiVolt battery technology. We’re looking at how this tool improves upon the formula and how it compares to Metabo HPT’s other rotary hammers.
- Model: Metabo HPT DH3640DAQ2
- Speed: 250-500 RPM
- Impact rate: 1400-2800 BPM
- Impact energy: 8.6 ft-lbs
- 4 speed modes
- Brushless motor
- Bit shank: SDS Max
- Vibration reduction
- Continuous run mode
The DH3640DAQ2 rotary hammer features four speed modes, with speeds ranging from 250 to 500 RPMs. For impact rates, this tool generates 1400 to 2800 BPM with a top impact energy level of 8.6 ft-lbs.
Compared to Metabo HPT’s previous iteration, this model has slightly lower top speeds, as well as a lower max impact rate. However, it steps up in the impact energy department, raising the bar by 11% compared to the DH36DMAQ2 rotary hammer. It also significantly reduces vibration, providing 17% less vibration than the previous model.
The DH3640DAQ2 rotary hammer sticks with a brushless motor and an SDS Max shank. Metabo HPT’s RFC (Reactive Force Control) technology also makes an appearance, cutting power to the motor in the event of a bound bit or tool overload, reducing the potential for injury and damage.
- Length: 19.6 inches
- Weight: 14.1 pounds (bare)
- Drill bit (capacity): 1 9/16 inches

- Power with Metabo HPT MultiVolt battery or AC adapter
The design team went with a familiar blueprint for the Metabo HPT DH3640DAQ2 rotary hammer. It has the same length as the previous model, at 19.6 inches. As a bare tool, it weighs 14.1 pounds, or around 16.2 pounds when you add in a 36V MultiVolt battery.
Speaking of the MultiVolt system, there are a few options when it comes to powering this tool. You can use any 18V/36V MultiVolt battery, or use an AC adapter (buy here) for all-day runtime.
Note: Keep in mind that there are no kit options at the time of writing, so if you’re not already on Metabo HPT’s MultiVolt platform, make sure you pick up a battery or two to get started.
