Cheltenham Township, PA – A DoorDash driver turned the tables on would-be carjackers early Tuesday morning, using his legally owned firearm to defend himself. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on the 1900 block of Humphrey Merry Way in the Lynnewood Gardens Apartments.
According to Cheltenham Township Police, the DoorDash driver, who had a valid permit to carry a firearm, was approached by two individuals. One of the suspects, later identified as 18-year-old Divine Allen Hargrove, demanded the driver’s car keys while brandishing a “ghost” gun with an extended magazine.
After the driver threw his keys to the ground, he heard a gunshot and immediately drew his own weapon, firing back at the suspects. Fortunately, neither the driver nor the suspects were hit by the gunfire.
Police quickly responded to the scene and, with the help of a K-9 unit, located Hargrove hiding near a garage. Hargrove, who was found with a ski mask and the gun, claimed to be the victim. However, the DoorDash driver’s description matched Hargrove, leading to his arrest.
Investigators revealed that the delivery was a setup, as the resident at the address had not placed the order. This incident is part of a troubling trend of similar robberies in the area, emphasizing the need for personal protection.
“The need for self-defense in situations like this reinforces the philosophy of carrying for personal safety,” said Lt. Andrew Snyder of Cheltenham Township Police.
Hargrove is now facing multiple charges, including robbery and firearms violations. He is being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $100,000 cash bail.
