Beauties in Carol’s Garden – FineGardening

We recently visited Carol’s winter garden in Hendersonville, North Carolina (Carol’s Winter Garden) and today we’re headed back to see more of her beauties. Carol’s been gardening here since 2009, and the garden has evolved and matured in beautiful ways in that time.

The tree with the small yellow flowers by the bridge in this picture is Cornus officinalis (Zone 5 – 8). Amazingly, Carol grew this tree from seed she collected at Longwood Gardens where she completed their certificate courses for gardeners.

Another incredible seed-grown tree – this one is Juniperus rigida (Zone 5 – 7) which is a beautiful specimen, and Carol says is one of the prickliest conifers she’s ever known.,

Early-blooming crocuses (Zone 3 – 8) are beautiful… and a honeybee has come by to get some early nectar and pollen.

Hellebore (Helleborus hybrids, Zone 4 – 8) start so early, and the blooms last a very long time in the cool temperatures of spring.

Hellebores come in a wide color range… this particularly dark on is incredible.
