Japanese tool frequently look different and this unusual design is based on an axe from the Kofun period in the 3rd Century. It’s made for us by blacksmiths in the Niigata prefecture. Those that try them inevitably find them wonderful to use. This is a tough ax with great balance. The 4-1/2″ laminated steel blade has a “bearded” shape, which brings the center of gravity closer to your hand.
Because wood swells and shrinks in different weather conditions, an axe head will from time to time become loose. On better-made axes, like our Japanese hand axe, a steel wedge (flat in this case) is driven into the wedge of the handle tenon.
If your axe head becomes loose with use, or even it arrives loose, simply drive the steel wedge deeper into the handle tenon to improve the fit. Use a hammer or mallet with a punch or large nail set.
Though the Forest Service and Boy Scouts recommend soaking an axe in water to remedy a loose axe head, this is a temporary fix at best, because the handle will eventually dry out, often resulting in a looser fit than what you started with. Of course, if you’re out in the woods with no tools, the Boy Scout method will work just fine.Additional Details:
- Great small axe for splitting kindling as it’s sharp, has a great angle, and the blade widens at a good pace for the split
- The bearded blade helps with contacting the wood and adds to the weight making for a great splitter
- Can also be used as a carpenter ax for carving spoons as the double wedge on the handle allows it to be used for splitting small logs to make spoon blanks
- It is not designed for hacking and slashing, but for controlled splitting making it an outstanding axe for its purpose
- Superb tool constructed extremely well with top notch materials built to last a lifetime
